Why Hire a College Consultant?
Why hire a college consultant? I get this question all the time. “So, what exactly do you do? Isn’t that what the school counselor is for?” Families choose to hire me for different reasons. The answer is different for each family but here are some reasons why one might hire me:
I keep the peace. It’s as simple as that. Parents and children don’t always agree during this process. I simply help mediate between the two to make sure everyone enjoys the experience and is happy in the end.
Times have changed. When I started doing college consulting, everything was done by paper. We would have envelope writing parties for college applications! Those days are gone and now everything is electronic. Because times have changed and processes have changed, most people outside the education industry are unfamiliar with the process.
Individual attention. School counselors are overwhelmed with the number of students assigned to them. Sometimes as many as 500 students are assigned to one counselor. School counselors do the best they can with the time they have, but they have many demands on their time, including counseling students, meeting with peer groups, and scheduling classes. I enjoy working hand-in-hand with school counselors as much as possible. I am simply another person to support the student through this process, not a replacement for the school counselor.
To enjoy the process. I help families save time and enjoy this important journey in their child’s life. The process can be fun if it is approached with an open mind and clear understanding.

Can this work be done by families and students without me? Absolutely! And I actually encourage families to do it themselves, but most families don’t have the time to devote to researching, calling, scheduling, etc. It is my hope that all families enjoy the process and have a positive outcome in the end.
